Fall scents in your home

Fall scents and my favorite apple crumble recipe

Below are some of the ways I like to get that fall feeling in my home as summer comes to an end and I start getting my chunky sweaters and fall décor out, and my favorite apple crumble recipe.

One of my favorite ways to start getting ready for fall is by pumping my home with the citrusy, spicy scents of nutmeg, orange, clove, grapefruit, bergamot, and a blend of orange, cinnamon, and black spruce. There’s nothing better than that feeling of slight chill in the air as the weather turns and I can start filling my home with these smells and a pumpkin baked good in the oven. While I love the warmer months, by the end of August/early September, I’m usually ready for something different.

I was never one to buy fall scented candles in the past because they usually give me a headache and smell artificial to me. I remember walking by the stores in the mall with smells permeating outside the door and needing to walk right past before I developed a headache. I’ve now found a way to have the same scents in a way that doesn’t harm my body and smells even better because they are the real thing.

The bundle gives you six oils, a diffuser, and Thieves Household Cleaner (total value: $212.45) for $130! You can also use code SHAREYL for 10% off.

While there are other oils that can be purchased separately to make even more blends, I think this bundle gives you the basics to mix and match to create a variety of your favorite smells.

Here’s a blend I love that’s a replica of the Anthropologie candle:

Anthro Autumn Blend

4 drops Christmas Spirit

4 drops Bergamot

3 drops Clove

3 drops Grapefruit

My favorite apple crumble recipe:

For the filling:

Juice of ½ lemon

1.5 T arrowroot flour

2.5 lbs. apples, sliced

½ cup light brown sugar

For the topping:

2/3 cup flour

2/3 cup old fashioned oats

½ cup slices almonds

¼ cup light brown sugar

1 t cinnamon

¼ t salt

1 stick unsalted butter, cut into ½ inch cubes

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Butter an 8x8 inch glass baking dish.

  2. In a bowl, whisk together the lemon juice and arrowroot flour. Add the apples and brown sugar. Toss together until the fruit is coated. Pour into the prepared pan.

  3. In a food processor, combine the flour, oats, almonds, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pulse until mixed. Add the butter. Pule until the butter is the size of peas. Sprinkle the mixture over the filling and bake for 40-45 minutes until the filling is bumbling and the top is light golden.

  4. Let the crumble cool for 5 min. before serving. Serve with your favorite vanilla ice cream.

Recipe adapted from Giada De Laurentiis’ recipe for peach and strawberry crumble.
